Park models and tiny houses, also known as mini houses, are an ever more popular way for people to downsize their current lifestyles and live more simply. The nice thing about these mini homes is that they can easily be transported to mobile home parks and pieces of private property almost anywhere there are roads to access it. So if you decide after several months that you don’t like where you are, you can arrange for your park model to be transported somewhere new.

Before you commit to living in a tiny house, though, you need to do some prep work to get yourself ready. Living in a park model is no small commitment, so here’s what you need to do.

Declutter Your Current House

Whatever possessions you have in your current house or apartment has to be seriously culled before you can move into a tiny home. Sometimes, people make use of a friend’s garage or a rentable storage unit to store items they want to keep, but it’s best if you can only do this for really valuable heirloom items, rather than stuff you could easily repurchase or get used.

Most tiny homes have a floor plan that’s less than 37 square metres, which is not a lot of space! Therefore, you’ll need to declutter. Ask yourself whether you use a given item often when deciding whether you should keep it. Also, figure out if there’s a way to keep the item in a more condensed format, like trading your book collection for a Kindle. Try to take a bag full of donations or a bag of trash out of your house or apartment once per day in the months leading up to your move to your tiny home.

Make a Budget

Next, you’ll want to make sure that you’ve established a budget for your new lifestyle. You’ll be saving a lot of money on things like property taxes, heating and cooling, mortgage payments or rent, and so forth, and it’s best if you can determine where you’ll reallocate those funds before you move into your park model home. Try to put your extra money towards retirement, future moves, or in a general savings account.

Figure Out Transportation

Some larger park models may only be transported via a professional park model moving company, so you’ll need to make those arrangements. However, certain tiny homes and park models can be towed by a towing vehicle, if it’s powerful enough. You may want to trade in your current vehicle for a larger truck or SUV that can handle your park model to make it quicker and easier to move whenever you like.
